Ammi Visnaga
(Khella)

Ammi visnaga, commonly known as khella, toothpick weed, or bishop’s weed, is a member of the Apiaceae family, closely related to plants like Queen Anne’s lace (Daucus carota) and fennel (Foeniculum vulgare). Native to the Mediterranean region of North Africa, Asia, and Europe, this annual or biennial herb thrives in sunny, dry climates.
Ammi visnaga has been utilized for its medicinal properties since ancient times. Traditional applications include the management of asthma, bronchial conditions, and kidney stones. The plant contains active compounds such as khellin and visnagin, which exhibit smooth muscle relaxant effects, aiding in respiratory and urinary health.
In modern herbalism, khella is recognized for its potential benefits in supporting respiratory health, particularly in conditions like asthma and bronchial spasms, due to its bronchodilatory effects. It has also been explored for cardiovascular support, especially in managing angina, as khellin may help dilate coronary arteries. Additionally, its traditional use in addressing kidney and urinary stones is attributed to its muscle-relaxing properties, facilitating the passage of stones.
Growing Ammi
Cultivating Ammi visnaga requires full sun and well-drained soil. The plant is drought-resistant once established but benefits from moderate watering during dry periods. It grows to a height of 3 to 4 feet, featuring intricate white umbels that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
While khella offers various therapeutic benefits, caution is advised due to potential side effects. The plant contains compounds that may increase skin sensitivity to sunlight, leading to potential irritation or burns. Its use during pregnancy and lactation is not recommended due to lack of research. Furthermore, individuals with kidney conditions should consult healthcare providers before using khella, as high doses may adversely affect kidney function.
