Meet Your Flower Power Instructor
ILANA SOBO
Clinical Herbalist, Ayurvedic Practitioner & Aromatherapist
Welcome! I am so glad you’ve found your way here. It’s truly an honor to share my passion for herbs, aromatic plants, and Ayurveda with you. The Flower Power Project is the culmination of a lifelong dream to help people like you and me find balance and wellness through the beauty, power & endlessly giving gifts of botanicals. For the past 27 years, I’ve worked as an Herbal Educator, Clinical Herbalist, Aromatherapist, and Ayurvedic Practitioner. My time working at Donald Yance’s Centre for Natural Healing and the Ayurvedic Institute with Dr. Vasant Lad profoundly shaped my path and how I work with herbs. My ethos as an herbalist is deeply inspired by all my teachers and colleauges who share folk wisdom with love, compassion, and reverence for nature, human evolution, and enlightenment. I currently co-instruct the clinical herbal training at Twin Star Herbal Education and teach Ayurvedic Herbology at the Mahatma School of Ayurveda. Sharing about herbs and flowers is my passion and it is my honor to share about them with love and devotion.
I am very fascinated by nature and channel this passion through avid photography and gardening, which constantly inspire me to learn & grow. Stewarding herbs, (especially aromatic ones) and wildflowers and watching pollinators thrive is my personal bliss. Many of the photographs featured here are from my garden or encounters with plants in the wild. I also adore botanical art and faery-tales and have curated a collection of fine art prints here for you to enjoy. I am profoundly inspired by the Flower Power Movement of the 1960s & I believe in the power of love, beauty, art, music, compassion and FLOWERS to create positive change. The ethos of this movement continues to live on in so many of us & offers a way to bring optimism & inspiration to one another in times of great need.
I lastly want to deeply acknowledge that some of the knowledge I share here is rooted in traditions passed down through generations. I hold respect and gratitude for the wisdom of Indigenous elders and traditional healers worldwide. My intention is never to speak over or co-opt these teachings but to honor their origins and inspire you to explore your own herbal heritage and the wisdom of those who have come before us. I hope to spark curiosity and encourage a deeper connection with nature and our ancestors from around the world.
I am deeply grateful for the plants & the teachers who have illuminated this path for me, and I’m so grateful for you. Thank you for being here. Together, we can celebrate the beauty & wisdom of nature & bring more joy, healing & connection into the world.
With love and gratitude,
Ilana

If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition, consult a qualified healthcare provider before using herbs.
Working with herbs safely begins with understanding their nature and how they interact with our bodies. Each plant has its own unique properties. Some plants are mild, food like and nourishing, while others can be potent only meant to be worked with short amounts of time or some rarer plants are harmful if misidentified or used improperly. Always take the time to accurately identify plants using trusted sources, and learn about their traditional and modern uses. Many plants have look-alikes in nature, some of which, like hemlock, can be toxic or even fatal. This isn’t meant to cause fear—rather, it’s a reminder that nature commands respect and that learning about plants is an essential part of working with them.
For thousands of years, humans have co-evolved with wild plants, benefiting from the foods and botanical medicine they provide. A great way to deepen your knowledge is by learning about your local ecosystem and plant families. Attending guided plant identification walks or using field guides can help you to learn how safely and confidently explore herbs. When working with any new herb, start with small amounts and observe how your body responds. Teas are a gentle way to incorporate herbs into daily life, and high-quality tea herbs are widely available at apothecaries, herb shops, and natural markets. If you’re unsure about an herb, connecting with experienced herbalists can be a valuable resource.
When harvesting wild plants, approach it with care and respect. Proper identification is essential, as is harvesting from clean, uncontaminated areas. Take only what you need, leaving plenty behind to support the plant’s continued growth and the surrounding ecosystem. Nature provides abundantly, and we can reciprocate by practicing mindful stewardship.
Creating harmony with nature means respecting and protecting the ecosystems we interact with. By harvesting responsibly and leaving wild spaces intact, we help ensure that plants, animals, and future generations can continue to thrive.
Herbs are among nature’s most generous offerings, connecting us to the land, supporting well-being, and enhancing our daily lives. Whether enjoyed in a warm cup of tea, infused into an aromatic oil, or simply admired in their natural habitat, plants remind us of the beauty, wisdom, and abundance that surrounds us.

Ayurveda is a fully holistic system of healing from India and dates back over five thousand years. Ayurveda integrates lifestyle practices, nutrition, yoga, pranayama, botanical medicine, gentle cleansing methods and many other physical and spiritual tools to support an individual's total wellness. The Sanskrit word Ayur-veda translates as the “Science of Life” and is based on the 5 elements of the cosmos. Using a system of doshas helps to bring the 5 elements into a contextual working language so you will know which tools to access for your unique being and constitution. What is unique about Ayurveda is that the multi folded healing tools can be very simple yet their healing effects can be wonderfully profound. Ayurvedic practices have a natural and deeply aesthetic expression through their ease of use and immediate positive effects. Thus practicing Ayurveda can be blissful and enjoyable.
My own journey with Ayurveda began under the guidance of my teacher, Dr. Vasant Lad, whose wisdom opened my heart to its transformative power. At the Flower Power Project, I carry forward this sacred tradition, sharing what I’ve learned from him. Together, we explore Ayurveda’s depth—daily rituals to ground you, herbal remedies to support you, and the art of nourishment and self-care—all to help you cultivate a life of harmony, balance, and vitality. To learn more about Ayurveda please visit ayurveda.com

The original Flower Power movement of the 1960s emerged as a vibrant response to war, inequality, and societal unrest. Rooted in the counterculture era, it was a call for peace, nonviolence, and unity, challenging the status quo with ideals of love and harmony. Flowers became a potent symbol—offered to soldiers, worn in hair, and painted on signs—as a gentle yet radical statement that beauty and compassion could disarm hatred and violence. It was a movement to help humans move towards a life of connection, freedom, and reverence for nature, inspiring generations to dream of a more harmonious, loving and kind world.
At the Flower Power Project, we carry this spirit forward by reconnecting people with the wisdom of plants, and the transformative power of nature. Through education, creativity, and intention, we hope to inspire others to embrace the gifts of herbal medicine, holistic living, and the magic of the natural world and ofcourse….flowers. It is with a heartful mission to help empower a new generation to cultivate balance, connection, harmony, peace and vitality with nature as their ally.
